Follow me into the disaster zone and live a day to day experience helping share and relieve the sufferings on this paradise island.

After spending 2 years living in this lovely place and finding much happiness, I can't help but go there to try to give back some of what I gained. Known by many names over the centuries: Taprobane, The Emerald Isle, Ceylon, and Serendib (which gave us the word "serendipity" for good luck and happy chance) or even just plain "Paradise", this ocean island, though troubled, was a very special place to live and work. Legend has is that King Solomon's Mines were here and there may just be some truth in that: when it rains heavily, gems spill out in the mud in certain places, the name Ratnapura means "city of the gems". The whole island, frankly, is a jewel and I love it.

However on December 26th 2004 Nature dealt a wrathful hand in the form of a giant tsunami that wiped out so much of the loveliness She had created out there in the Indian Ocean. (As yet) uncountable numbers died, though fortunately none of our beloved friends and acquaintances were hurt. The world mourns, indeed people who have barely heard of Sri Lanka wept openly here in distant Los Angeles.

But what counts now is action. I knew I must volunteer and go. And because I write and people say they like to read my stories, I have decided to share the experiences via the Internet. Connections were always bad (under 1k per second on bad days!), and I'm sure they are worse than ever, but with patience I can upload photographs of the work and people I meet. Sponsors can see what I am up to with their precious money. There will be faces, places and tragedies, I'm sure. But I know these people - this is Asia - there is a philosophy and resilience there that we do not have in the West. There will be friendliness and joy among the survivors. It is something to look forward to and honour.

This is not an exercise in vainglory but an attempt to allow you to share a more intimate experience with someone who knows the country and is there. It won't be news pap or media hysterics. Just the people, the land, the action. I hope you log on often to check.

In the meantime, I'd like to share with you what I found the most moving image of all in the blizzard of grief thrown at us by the  media: a quiet unassuming picture by a French photographer of a dead child's arm, limp in the mud....

So much thanks due to my sponsors, who must be acknowledged for their compassion and responsibility. David Brown and his son-in-law Chuck have done so much for me in Salt Lake City, Utah. But also Sue Redding in Washington. More details will follow as time allows. IF YOU WANT TO GIVE, SEND DONATIONS TO THE SCOTT-MUMBY SRI LANKA AID DONATION FUND, MAINTAINED AND MANAGED IN UTAH.
